There's a certain liberation in writing in a blog and then not giving anyone the address. Sort of like a diary, knowing someone might find it. Or, knowing my personality, more like masturbating on the business end of a one-way mirror. I really had no idea what I would write about until I drank a bit of the cheap stuff and was suddenly pregnant with witty things to say and intoxicated by my own cleverness. Maybe doing a line or taking a pill would yield even more interesting posts (if I didn't lose interest or get hypnotized by the tactile sensation of pushing keys respectively). Perhaps I should find a way to automatically color-code the posts based on which substance I'm abusing when I write them.
Speaking of which, those of you who maintain websites or blogs, what is your process for writing posts? If you're a particularly verbose facebook poster (you know who you are...) feel free to chime in as well. Do you word-vomit and then go back and edit? Do you compose in a word-processor so you can work for hours to achieve the illusion of spontaneity? (John Cage and Lang Lang would both do this, I think. All those wrong notes must be on purpose.) Or do you just write when you're bored and figure that anyone hypercritical of you won't take the time to visit your site in the first place? Also, I just became truly appreciative of how aesthetically pleasing so many simple-looking websites are. Picking fonts, choosing colors, trying to keep it visually stimulating while still giving the impression of a truly miserable artist... these things are difficult. As is balancing the vernacular of "blogging" while making it look effortless. Having it feel like a conversation while maintaining the rigors of written prose. Nico Muhly does all of this brilliantly, if I'm honest (his website is a looker too). John Adams does not, but his posts are always entertaining and often profound, so I don't think anyone cares. It doesn't help that I'm using a cheap and free web-site maker, being too inept to even properly install wordpress (five-minute installation my ass), but I'm such a neophyte that it appears to be necessary. So thank you for visiting, and please come back soon, because I'm sure I will have many more self-important things to say. Also, listen to my music! That is the nominal reason for this site, after all.
